Dave’s Top Tips for a Healthier Lawn (Without Overcomplicating It)

Dave’s Top Tips for a Healthier Lawn (Without Overcomplicating It)

After nearly 40 years as a professional greenskeeper, I've seen just about every lawn problem going — and most of them come down to a few simple things being missed. Here's 7 tips that will have you on your way to a healthier lawn without overcomplicating it.

Tip 1: Walk Your Lawn Regularly

My biggest advice? Get out there and actually look at your lawn.

  • Walk your lawn every few days
  • Look for early stress: yellowing, thinning, patchiness
  • The earlier you catch issues, the easier they are to fix

Tip 2: Fix Problems Early — Don’t Wait

Most lawn damage doesn’t happen overnight. It gets worse because people wait too long.

  • Fresh dog wee damage = fixable
  • Fully dead patches = need repair first (plugging/sprigging)

👉 Act early with RESCUE — Dog Wee Repair
Best used as soon as yellow patches appear

Tip 3: Water Deeply, Not Lightly

Quick sprinkles don’t help lawns. They actually train shallow roots.

My top recommendations:

  • Fewer watering days
  • Longer, deeper soaks
  • Always water after applying treatments once dry

👉 Maximise water absorption with VITAL — Wetting Agent
Boost fertiliser performance and help nutrients reach the roots.

Tip 4: Healthy Lawns Start Below the Surface

Strong grass starts with healthy soil.

  • Feed the soil, not just the leaf
  • Support roots and microbial activity
  • Lawn products work better when the soil is healthy

Tip 5: Mowing Makes a Difference

Cutting too low stresses grass and invites problems.

My mowing tips:

  • Never remove more than one-third of the leaf at once
  • Keep blades sharp
  • Adjust height with the seasons

Tip 6: Work With the Weather, Not Against It

You don’t need perfect conditions.

  • Lawn care works year-round
  • Cooler weather is often ideal for recovery
  • After heavy rain, reapply treatments if needed

Tip 7: Simple, Regular Care Wins

You don’t need:

  • Fancy gear
  • Complicated schedules
  • Dozens of products

You just need:

  • Regular checks
  • Consistent watering
  • Targeted products and timely treatment

That’s how great lawns are built.

Final Word

Most lawn problems are easy to manage if you stay on top of them.
Walk your lawn, act early, water properly — and don’t overthink it.
